Oakland Roots travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the teams first midweek match of the season. Roots are coming off of a sold out Home Opener at Laney College against Monterey Bay FC, with the visitors winning on a late goal, pushing the Roots start of the season to three without a win that sees the team bottom of the Western Conference standings. Roots were unable to hold the lead late against Monterey Bay following a two goal performance from on-loan striker Óttar Magnús Karlsson. Oakland conceded late in the match, dropping the opportunity to pick up the first points of the season.
About New Mexico:
This is the second all-time meeting between Oakland Roots and New Mexico United with the first coming on August 18, 2021 last season where the two sides played to a one all draw. New Mexico is coming off of a weekend draw with Orange County SC. The side from Albuquerque have gotten off to a hot start winning their first two games before the weekend draw that sees United near the top of the Western Division standings. The team is led by head coach Zac Smith who took over in the offseason after three years as an assistant coach with the team.
