Oakland Roots and Phoenix battled in the first half with the hosts picking up an early goal in the 11th minute from Darren Mattocks. The team did not let the early goal discourage their offensive attack, creating some great opportunities including a narrow miss from Lindo Mfeka that hit the crossbar from close range. Goalkeeper Paul Blanchette made some great saves throughout the half, keeping the game close going into halftime. 

The pace of the game was more of the same in the second half with both teams exchanging shots on goal but neither of them truly threatening. Jeremy Bokila came in off the bench to provide a spark on offense with all of his goals this season having been from being a substitute. Ultimately Roots were unable to come away with the score as Phoenix Rising continues their undefeated streak at home this year.

In keeping with the Festival’s theme of ‘Healing Hearts’, the Cup will be a celebration of sports and community health which will feature an exciting street soccer tournament for adult and youth teams from across the city organized by Street Soccer USA – a non-profit organization which uses soccer to help low-income and homeless youth and adults succeed in school, at work and in their community. 

The Street Soccer USA Cup Series combines exciting street soccer action with social impact and has taken place in iconic locations around the country including New York City’s Times Square and San Francisco’s Civic Center. In October 2021 the Cup will come to Oakland for the very first time as part of the city’s iconic Dia de los Muertos event – a free, outdoor festival of music and culture at the heart of the vibrant, culturally-rich Fruitvale neighborhood that combines world-class live music, family-friendly games, rides and activities, traditional Latin American artisans, and stunning altar artistic installations created by community members paying homage to los Muertos. The Día de los Muertos Festival is organized by The Unity Council, whose mission is to promote social equity and improve quality of life by building vibrant communities where everyone can work, learn, and thrive.

The Cup is part of ‘Roots in the Community’ – Oakland Roots’ grassroots community outreach program presented by Anthem Blue Cross. Roots in the Community is about growing the game of soccer and increasing access for all, whether as players, coaches or fans.

Oakland Roots return home to Laney for the last of four games against Las Vegas Lights in 2021. The opening match between the two sides was taken by Vegas on July 10th as Roots was going through league health and safety protocols and had a limited roster. With the full team available Oakland came back and took the next two on the road in Vegas by a score of 3-1 on August 21st and 1-0 on September 8th.

On Wednesday, October 6th at 7:00 PM, Roots will face off against one of the teams battling for Playoff position in NorCal rival Sacramento Republic FC. After each of the first three matchups with Sacramento this season resulted in draws, this game will determine the season series as well as provide a crucial opportunity for reaching the postseason. The night will also feature $1 beers and sodas for all fans.
