Oakland Roots and Soul Sports Club, in partnership with the Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation, announced the completion of a fully renovated futsal court at Rainbow Recreation Center, highlighted by a striking new mural designed by internationally renowned artist Shepard Fairey.
The revitalized court represents the intersection of sport, culture, and community—core values shared by all organizations involved in the project. Beyond resurfacing and improving the playing area which previously was underutilized, the court now serves as a vibrant public artwork and community asset.
The centerpiece of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind ground mural designed by Shepard Fairey, marking the first time the celebrated artist created a mural specifically for a sports surface. The artwork was brought to life by a team of local artists led by East Oakland native Kalani Cecaci, further connecting the project to The Town’s rich artistic heritage and creative community.
It’s very exciting to be able to unveil this new piece in the Oakland community, highlighting resonant themes and values for my first sports-specific ground mural with Oakland Roots and Soul SC along with Oakland Parks and Recreation Foundation,” said Artist Shepard Fairey. “We witnessed disparate countries being unified around sport with the captivating World Cup and it’s a perfect time to celebrate global citizenship together in Oakland.”

The project was made possible through support from PG&E, Anthem Blue Cross, and Oakland Roots and Soul Foundation, whose investments help advance equitable access to health, wellness, recreation and community development throughout Oakland. The renovated court will be open to the public this week and available for free community programming, organized youth recreation and open play futsal.
