Charleston Battery took early control of the game through possession but never seriously threatened the Oakland net in the first 20 minutes. The Battery continued on the front foot, with players like Austine Williams, Fidel Barajas, and Beto Avila creating danger in front of Oakland’s goal. However, against the run of play, Oakland eventually scored when Memo Diaz curled a perfect cross to Danny Barbir, who headed Roots into the lead in the 41st minute. Oakland maintained that 1-0 advantage into the half.
In the second half, the Battery came out in control again as Roots’ center back, Emrah Klimenta, cleared one off the line to keep his side in the lead minutes into the half. While Charleston maintained possession, Oakland created the best couple of chances in the first 15 minutes of the second half through Johnny Rodriguez and Jeciel Cedeño. In the 63rd minute, Nick Markanich had the best chance for the home side, but he pulled it wide, much to the relief of Oakland. Paul Blanchette was forced into a big save in the 79th minute to preserve the lead. Oakland was forced into a few substitutions but were able to hang on in the end for a hard fought shutout victory on the road.
Oakland Roots will now have a week off before returning home on Saturday, August 19th to host Colorado Springs Switchbacks.
