The first half was a battle that saw both goalkeepers make multiple saves. Oakland Roots’ Óttar Magnús Karlsson, Edgardo Rito and Mikael Johnsen forced the Galaxy II goalie Eric Lopez into some difficult saves throughout the first half. Tarek Morad also sent one of Oakland’s corner kicks off the crossbar but Roots were unable to score in the first half. Paul Blanchette was equal to his counterpart and made a couple of saves of his own. Just before the half Roots Charlie Dennis was sent off for a second yellow card as the first half ended 0-0 in Carson, California with LA up a player.
LA Galaxy found the back of the net early in the second half through Owen Lambe to take the 1-0 lead. Cameron Dunbar quickly made it 2-0 to the home side as LA Galaxy had a comfortable lead 10 minutes into the second half. Paul Blanchette would make a flurry of second half saves for Oakland totalling 10 saves in all by the end of the game. Azocar was able to pull one back for Oakland in the 88th minute, before Preston Judd quickly restored the Galaxy lead. Oakland would eventually fall by a score of 3-1.
Oakland now heads to Sacramento for the rivalry match against the Republic next Saturday, July 9th, before returning home on July 16th.
