Oakland, CA – Oakland Roots Sports Club, has signed a partnership with Oakland-headquartered consumer technology company, Credit Karma.
Credit Karma helps more than 120 million members globally connect their spending, saving and borrowing to optimize their finances and help them reach their financial goals. The company moved its headquarters to Oakland in 2021 in the new Key Building at 1100 Broadway and employs nearly 850 people locally.
“We are thrilled to be working with Credit Karma on this very important work in Oakland, said Roots Chief Revenue Officer, Steven Powell. The goal of the partnership is to make financial literacy fun for kids and parents, helping them develop healthy savings habits that can serve them throughout their life.”
Credit Karma will serve as the title sponsor of Roots “Soccer for Financial Freedom” initiative which includes a financial literacy curriculum developed by Goalsetter, a family banking “super app” founded by Oakland native and former Nickelodeon and Discovery executive Tanya Van Court. Together with Goalsetter, Roots is fulfilling its mission of providing soccer fans with a path towards financial freedom that will create a new generation of savers and investors.
“Credit Karma has always prioritized laying “roots” in the communities in which we operate and we do that by partnering with like minded local organizations like the Oakland Roots, to further our mission of championing financial progress for all,” said Colleen McCreary, chief people, places and publicity officer at Credit Karma. “This is more than just a logo on a jersey for us. We look forward to teaming up with the Oakland Roots to further their work around financial literacy, a cause directly connected to our work at Credit Karma. Go Roots!”
In addition to Credit Karma’s entitlement of “Soccer for Financial Freedom”, Credit Karma’s logo will be prominently displayed on the sleeve of all Roots players home and away game jerseys and replica kit and they will be title sponsor of “Financial Freedom Night” at the Roots during the 2022 USLC season.

About Credit Karma
An American multinational personal finance company founded in 2007, which has been a brand of Intuit since December 2020. It is best known as a free credit and financial management platform, but its features also include monitoring of unclaimed property databases and a tool to identify and dispute credit report errors. The company operates in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
About Goalsetter
Launched in 2016, Goalsetter’s banking, savings and investment app meets the needs of the whole family and grows with kids as they grow, from cradle to graduation. Van Court’s background at Nickelodeon, ESPN and Discovery Education, allows Goalsetter to provide families key financial tools that other youth banking platforms do not — financial education and gamification front and center of the youth banking experience. Goalsetter also offers hundreds of financial literacy quizzes that are mapped to national financial literacy standards for each grade level from K-12, but centered around memes and GIFs from popular culture.
