
Oakland Roots have qualified for the Playoffs in their inaugural season as part of the USL Championship. Following a dramatic night at Laney, Oakland earned the fourth seed in the Pacific Division and the final spot of 16 in the Playoffs. Oakland Roots will face the number one seed in the Mountain Division as they take on El Paso Locomotive FC on Friday night with kick-off set for 6:30 PM PST.

Oakland is coming off back to back must win games against San Diego and Sporting KC II. On both occasions Oakland had to win to keep the season alive so the team has been in playoff mode for two full weeks now. In San Diego, Oakland needed a dramatic stoppage time penalty to win the game 4-3 and return home for their regular season finale at Laney with a chance to make the playoffs. Oakland took care of business with a 1-0 win over KC on the final day, before watching the last 30 minutes of the OC vs LA game on the Laney video board in the stadium as OC scored late to get Roots into the playoffs over LA as the last of 16 teams to qualify.
Chuy Enriquez found the net in both must win games for Oakland, coming up with clutch goals when he was needed most. Akeem Ward scored a SportsCenter top 10 goal vs San Diego and followed that up with an honorable mention for USL team of the week vs Sporting KC. Jeremy Bokila’s goal vs San Diego gave him the team lead at the end of the season with five goals. Chuy, Wal Fall and Ariel Mbumba were all close behind with four while Lindo Mfeka led the team in assists with four. Keeper Paul Blanchette picked up his fourth clean sheet of the season on the final day as the team found their form at the right time.
This will be the first time that Oakland plays El Paso in USL play making both teams unfamiliar with their opponent. The one exception to that will be Memo Diaz of Oakland Roots who will be returning to his hometown to play against his former club for the first time.

El Paso finished the season top of the Mountain Division despite a 4-1 loss on the final day of the regular season. Locomotive ended on 64 points with only four losses all season, none of those at home at Southwest University Park. El Paso’s home unbeaten run goes back to last season, making the trip a difficult ask for the first year USL team from Oakland. El Paso is second in the league in clean sheets with 13 and are tied 3rd in the league with just 34 goals conceded. The team from Texas are led in attack by Luis Solignac and Aaron Gomez who both have 10 goals on the season.
