Oakland Roots fall to Orange County in a game that saw ten players receive cards. While possession was split evenly, Roots struggled to find rhythm after several players rejoined the team having spent several weeks away from the field. Roots were on the front foot early in the second half before a red card to defender Max Ornstil forced Oakland to play a man down. Roots now focus all efforts on the long-awaited return to Laney College on Wednesday.
Head Coach Jordan Ferrell
What are your first initial thoughts about the game?
It was tough, I thought we had chances. We had chances. That’s the toughest part. I’m not one to complain about referees but I think there were some questionable decisions across the board. They (Orange County) clearly knew we were trying to get in behind them and when we put a ball across the face and it’s blocked, when there was no card there, that could have put them down to ten men. Those kinds of decisions build up and frustrate the players but we gotta keep our heads. Big credit to them because even down two and down a man we were creating some good chances. There’s good stuff there, we just have to turn those chances into wins.
You guys had a couple good chances before they scored their first goal, and even a few good chances when you were playing down a man, what do you think that says about the team?
It’s progress, big progress. The last couple games we’ve been playing without a center forward so it’s tough to create chances without someone that’s comfortable in front of the net. Tonight we had Brandon and were able to bring Bokila back as well, it makes a big difference. We’re still getting guys back fully fit which is positive and I think being able to produce the chances that we did and the performance we had under those circumstances was a big positive.
