Oakland Roots is excited to safely get back out into the community and help grow the game of soccer in Oakland. This weekend, as part of the Roots in the Community initiative presented by Anthem, we took part in the Outdoor Play Day at Liberation Park, organized by the Black Cultural Zone.
Outdoor Play Day is a free event for families to enjoy activities, food and music. Liberation Park is a parcel of land at the Eastmont Mall in East Oakland which the Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation has revived to change the negative impression of East Oakland and make sure there’s a balance between a thriving Black community and gentrification. Each week the Park hosts events that highlight Black arts, culture, people and business.
Thanks to our Purpose Partner Street Soccer USA and our Community Coaching Partner Coaching Corps, Oakland Roots provided free soccer games, activities and competitions for the visiting kids and families. Roots Assistant Coach Nana Attakora came out to play with the youth and talk to local kids and parents. Roots in the Community presenting partner Anthem was also on hand to provide information about low-cost medical care and information about COVID-19.

"It feels great to be able to be safely back out in the community" said Roots Chief Purpose Officer Mike Geddes. "What the Black Cultural Zone is doing at Liberation Park and across Oakland is inspiring and we are proud to be able to support their work. We're excited about the opportunity to bring game of soccer to many more people, whether they want to be fans, players and even coaches."
