Since the day the club was founded, our dream has been to build the first dedicated professional soccer stadium in the history of Oakland. This is the critical next step in our efforts to achieve sustainability and deepen our impact in The Town.
Launching a professional soccer team in a city with no venues that meet the standards for professional soccer has not been easy. From day one, we knew that we would need our own home to continue our growth trajectory and provide a stable, consistent venue for our teams and the community. Our own stadium is also an essential part of our goal to elevate Oakland Soul to professional status, on equal footing with Roots.
Laney College and Cal State University, East Bay, have hosted us over the past several years, giving us the platform to bring purpose-driven professional soccer to Oakland and the Bay Area. Our proposed Interim Stadium will allow us to expand our capacity to host fans on game day, create equity between our men’s and women’s teams, and further support our mission to be a cultural and economic resource in the community
Why?
As the next step in the growth trajectory of Oakland Roots and Soul SC, the club is seeking a match-day venue that will allow it to elevate Oakland Soul to professional status and provide a stable, consistent home for both teams in Oakland.
Laney College and CSUEB have hosted the Roots over the past several years, providing the means for the club to launch and grow over the past 5 years. Our proposed Interim Stadium will allow the club to expand its game day capacity, equitably support both teams, and grow in its role as a cultural and economic resource in the community.
What?
Oakland Roots and Soul SC is proposing to build an Interim Stadium at 8000 S. Coliseum Way, adjacent to the Oakland Coliseum complex. Formerly the site of a Malibu Grand Prix, the 8.8-acre site would accommodate a 10,000-seat stadium, which will double our current match-day capacity.
Fan Experience:
Having our own home will allow us to enhance the fan experience, continuing the traditions that our community has asked us to continue, while making room for new traditions and experiences. Stadium features include pregame entertainment spotlighting local artists, a generous area for the Block Party that highlights local foods, and The Green where fans can relax and kids can run around.
Community Asset:
In addition to becoming the home for Oakland Roots and Oakland Soul, our goal is for the facility to be used to meet the needs of the greater community during its tenure. Local youth sporting events, farmers’ markets, concerts, and community gatherings have all been suggested. We welcome any and all ideas on how to activate the site.
