Oakland Roots have faced adversity all season long. From a canceled home opener, to health and safety protocols forcing the postponement of two more games, to playing half their home games away from Laney, to coming back from one win in the first 13 games to now being on the brink of the playoffs. The story of Oakland Roots first USL Championship season is truly one for the movie writers. 

Oakland host Sporting KC II Saturday at Laney College for the first time in club history. Roots will end the season playing a team from the Central Division while all other Pacific Division Rivals in the playoff fight are set to kick off at 7:30 PM, 30 minutes behind Oakland Roots. Following a heart-stopping 4-3 win to keep the playoff hopes alive in San Diego on Sunday, Oakland now has to back that win up with another three points to earn the final playoff spot in the division. 

Oakland Roots need all three points as LA Galaxy sit one point ahead and own the tiebreaker over Roots, meaning a draw and just a single point would not be enough for Oakland. Additionally should LA win, Oakland would not be able to pass the Southern California side, even with a win. Tacoma Defiance, who are even on points with Oakland cannot pass Roots in the standings so long as Roots win. Oakland holds the head to head tiebreaker over Tacoma if it were to come to a situation where both sides won.

As the 2021 regular season draws to a close, the squad’s chances for a spot in the USL Championship playoffs are alive. Next Saturday, October 30th is the final game of the regular season and we need YOU to come support your Roots and give us a true home field advantage. Saturday will also be the first-ever Town Biz Night presented by American Express and will feature activities including:

  • A special pre-game performance by Oakland, Bay Area based artist Ruby Red. Get to the game early and don’t miss out.
  • Goalsetter and the Fam1st Family Foundation will be working with 100 youth and families to help start their path to financial freedom.
  • Show up in your best Halloween costumes. The first 500 kids in the stadium with a Halloween costume will receive free ice cream, courtesy of Little Giant Ice Cream.
  • Visit the Small Biz of the Match Marketplace to meet local vendors and try small batch products.
  • Pre-game performance by Oaktown Jazz at the E10 Function.

Roots Top Loyal in 4-3 Thriller to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

 

Roots traveled down to San Diego for their final road game of the season for another important game as they need to win out for a shot at the playoffs. Unlike the Bay Area, it was sunny skies at kickoff. Early into the game, San Diego sat back defensively as they have in the past against Roots and had a slight edge on overall possession. In the 17th minute San Diego’s Augustine Williams found the back of the net to put the Loyal up 1-0. From there, Roots upped the tempo and began to find themselves in the attacking third more consistently. A poorly passed ball from San Diego defender Callum Montgomery in the 35th minute led to an own goal, putting the teams level going into the half.

Head Coach Jordan Ferrell kept the same lineup to start the second half and Roots came out swinging. Just seven minutes in, Chuy Enriquez scored off a beautiful strike from the top of the box to give Roots their first lead of the game, but they weren’t done. Just a few minutes later, defender Akeem Ward scored off a volley to himself over a San Diego defender to increase their lead. Down two, the Loyal went on the offensive. Augustine Williams netted his second goal of the game to bring the score to 2-3. 

By the 83rd minute, Head Coach Jordan Ferrell had used all five of his substitutions to keep the legs fresh but Corey Hertzog found the equalizer in the 86th minute. Tarek Morad received a red card after expressing some frustration to the center referee, bringing Roots down to just 10 men with only five minutes plus stoppage time to go. A foul by Loyal goalkeeper Austin Guerrero on Johnny Rodriguez gave Roots a stoppage time penalty kick. Substitute Jeremy Bokila got the honors and netted it to seal the win for Roots and keep their playoff chances alive.

Roots will return home to Laney College for the final game of the season on Saturday, October 30th against Sporting Kansa City II.

We made it emotional more than anything. The two goals we conceded in the second half were highly unnecessary. At minimum, I’m proud of the guys for fighting all the way through and getting the three points. That’s huge.

After everything the team has been through this year, what does it mean to come home to Laney and have a chance to make playoffs?

People have been asking me about the playoff race for the last month. I think we’ve maintained that we always focus on the game ahead of us, and also we’ve had a feeling that it would come down to the last game of the season. A big advantage there is that we’re going to be at home and we know that the Laney crowd is going to be rocking. It’s important that we come in and focus so that we get those last three points.

What is your message to the Oakland Fans?

We need them to be rockin’, we need them to be energetic, we need them to be positive, and we need them to be the wind underneath our wings. The guys will feel that energy and come out flying.

Oakland and San Diego have split their three game season series heading into this fourth and final matchup with Oakland Roots winning the most recent encounter 2-1 courtesy of a Johnny Rodriguez Goal of the Year candidate and a second half Jose Hernandez PK. Just one week prior to that 2-1 win, the two sides fought to a 0-0 draw and in the first match all the way back in June, San Diego escaped with a 1-0 victory from a late Miguel Ibarra goal. 

Oakland Roots are coming off three consecutive games where they have been unable to find the back of the net, bringing it to 14 games total in which Oakland Roots have been shutout. Roots have three tied for the team lead in goals at four with Bokila, Mbumba and Wall. Roots will be without team leading creator Lindo Mfeka who has four assists on the season.

Roots Hang on to Playoff Hopes with Scoreless Draw in Tacoma

 

Oakland Roots traveled up to Tacoma, Washington for a midweek bout with Tacoma Defiance for the fourth and final time this season. Rain earlier in the day made for some slippery conditions but Roots controlled possession early and maintained throughout the entire first half. The squad had their chances through the first 45 minutes with five shots but went into the half still searching for that breakthrough goal.

The second half was more of the same as Roots continued to control possession by a large margin. Head coach Jordan Ferrell brought in some fresh legs midway through the half, subbing on Max Ornstil and Ariel Mbumba. Ultimately neither team was able to create that game-defining moment and settled with a scoreless draw.

Roots are still in the playoff chase and travel to San Diego this Sunday, October 24th before returning to Oakland for the season finale on October 30th.

In the previous three meetings between the two sides the home team has taken the victory on each occasion by a score of 3-1. Oakland Roots Latest News:

Oakland Roots are coming off back to back defeats against Phoenix and Orange County that have seen the team go from fourth place and in a playoff spot to now sitting five points back of LA Galaxy II for the final spot in the playoffs with only three games remaining. If LA wins on Wednesday and Roots lose, Oakland would see their playoff hopes end. With the team currently sitting on 34 points and LA owning the tiebreaker over Oakland, Wednesday's game is a must-win situation. 

 

Oakland Roots travel to Tacoma to face off against Defiance for the last time this year with both teams facing a must-win situation to keep their playoff hopes alive. In the previous three meetings between the two sides the home team has taken the victory on each occasion by a score of 3-1. Wall Fal and Lindo Mfeka have each scored twice this season vs the side from the Pacific Northwest.

Roots Remain in 5th After Close Loss to Orange County

 

Oakland Roots hosted Orange County SC on a warm Saturday night at Laney College in front of a packed house. The squad worked to control possession early on, leading 58% to 42%. Orange County found themselves in the attacking third quite frequently but the defense stood tough. In the 18th minute Roots conceded a penalty off a broken play in the box. Due to encroachment on the first try, Orange County had to retake the kick and Paul Blanchette got the stop. Unfortunately just a few minutes later, OC would score on the counter to put them up 1-0. An injury to Lindo Mfeka in the 40th minute led to the substitution of Jeremy Bokila to the center forward position. 

Ten minutes into the second half, Jose Hernandez was issued a red card for retaliation after he was fouled. From there, playing a man down, the match got much more physical with five total cards being issued in the half. Head Coach Jordan Ferrell used all of his substitutions to keep the legs fresh on the pitch. Despite being a man down, Roots found themselves more in the attacking third than earlier but ultimately they were unable to find the back of the net to equalize.

Roots go on the road for their next two games before returning home for the final game of the season on Saturday, October 30th.

It’s a tough one, we did it to ourselves. We had chances, good chances, even Paul almost scored. But at the same time we did pretty well, we stretched it going down to ten men. We’re not just gonna pack it in playing down a guy, but it’s a tough one. 

Talk about the game plan and how it progressed after they got the goal:

I think early on with Lindo (Mfeka) we were getting into good pockets behind them, got some good looks in that space. The big change really came in the second half. We were going to push numbers to get the equalizer but the red card came as we were about to make that sub. We wanted to still control their play centrally and give ourselves a chance to support the forwards, which is asking a lot of everyone when you’re playing a man down. Credit to Matias (Fissore) and Wal (Fall) did a great job covering a lot of ground tonight.

Oakland Museum of California hosts Oakland Roots for 2021 Team Photos

 

Oakland Roots and the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) set up the 2021 Oakland Roots Team photo shoot on the grounds of the museum, using the newly renovated gardens for a series of dramatic backdrops. Oakland Roots has long been inspired by the community work of OMCA and wanted to highlight the Museum in an artistic way that matched the essence of the community gathering place. 

 

 

Oakland Roots and the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) set up the 2021 Oakland Roots Team photo shoot on the grounds of the museum, using the newly renovated gardens for a series of dramatic backdrops. “We love how OMCA uses the arts to create a safe and welcoming place for people to come together and celebrate creativity and diversity, because we’re inspired to do the same thing,” said Mike Geddes, Chief Purpose Officer at Oakland Roots. “We look forward to exploring more ways we can work with the Museum to bring Oakland together.”

Write Your Roots at Laney on 10/16

 

‘Write Your Roots’ is a city-wide, multi-generational writing and poetry campaign led by Oakland Roots and our Purpose Partner Chapter 510, a made-in-Oakland youth writing, bookmaking & publishing center. 

Chapter 510 is calling all Oakland Roots fans to help co-create the longest, city-wide collaborative poem written by Oaklanders yet. The second longest poem was written last year, an ode to Oakland, Because This City, which you can read online here.  

Oakland Roots fans attending the Write Your Roots match on Saturday October 16th will be invited to write and submit four lines of poetry on the theme of POWER, to add to poems written by the Oakland Roots players earlier this year as part of a creative writing workshop designed to help each team member connect with their roots and identity. A young poet from Chapter 510 will also be performing live on the field during the match.

The final collaborative poem will be unveiled in April on ‘Write Your Roots Day’, which has been officially recognized in the City of Oakland by Mayor Libby Schaaf.
