Oakland Roots were on the front foot early as Edgardo Rito finished a chance in the 21st minute off the feed from Mikael Tørset Johnsen to give Oakland the lead. Roots continued to attack with the next best chance coming late in the first half when a feed from Rito just missed Johnsen. The half would end with Oakland ahead 1-0.
The second half was a balanced affair with chances coming from both sides. Benny Diaz held firm with saves at the back as the best Monterey chance went just wide of the post in the 84th minute. Oakland Roots killed the game with a goal in stoppage time from Darek Formella off the pass from Óttar Magnús Karlsson. The game ended with Oakland taking away the 2-0 victory.
Oakland now returns home to host the Rio Grande Valley Toros at Laney on Saturday, June 11th.
Talking to Head Coach Juan Guerra
What was your message before the match?
Juan Guerra: That the week finishes today at 9:30 and the boys got the job done 27 minutes early. We finished the week strong. We finished with three points on the road. I’m happy. When you see this (pointing to the fans) you are telling me that it’s almost 400 traveling of our own coming here to support and to push, to suffer and now to enjoy it together. It makes me understand a bit more the responsibility that we have. Because when you put on this crest and you put on this jersey, when you represent this organization that has so many people who love it, there is a big responsibility for us. The guys took care of the job and I’m gonna go in and congratulate them, as you know it wasn’t an easy week for us. Now we need to keep pushing forward and there is a lot left to go.
Keeping the zero has been something you have been repeating each week. Talk about the defense.
Juan Guerra: The importance of keeping the zero in this game, while playing away was key. They knew it, I said it to them, but they even wrote it on the locker room and they took the responsibility that we were gonna keep the zero, because we are a team that creates chances. We played well offensively and defensively, that is why I am happy. We came on the road able to impose our identity here in front of our people in an away match. It feels very good.
