Roots Head to Sacramento for Critical 2026 Season Finale at Republic FC
They don’t get much bigger than this.
Roots will close out their 2026 regular season campaign this Saturday, October 24th at 7 PM PT as the club takes the short trip up I-80 to face NorCal rivals Sacramento Republic FC with a playoff berth on the line.
Oakland has been hot to end the year, staying in the playoff race with results in eight of their last nine matches, victories in three of their last five, and a club-record run of four consecutive clean sheets.
But there is still work to be done, and it will have to be done versus an opponent that has stifled Roots throughout their history. In 16 previous meetings between Oakland and Sacramento, Roots have won only two, and have played to an all-time 2-6-8 (W-D-L) record in the series.
With 38 points in the Western Conference table from an overall 9-11-9 record, Roots currently sit in 10th place, two short of the 8th place playoff line.
Whatever the results of their match, they will need outside help to reach that spot, as a victory from either Orange County SC or Phoenix Rising FC in their respective Saturday matches would eliminate Roots from contention.
With a win versus Sacramento, however, draws or losses from both Orange County and Phoenix would put Oakland into the 8th place position outright on points.
A draw versus Sacramento and losses from both Orange County and Phoenix would also send Roots to the playoffs as Oakland holds the tiebreaker over both clubs via Western Conference goal differential and Western Conference victories, respectively.
Perhaps fortunately for Oakland, Sacramento has already secured their playoff position, and even a loss could no longer lose them a home playoff game. It is therefore possible that Sacramento could favor a more conservative gameplan in order to ensure the health of their starters come the knockout pressures of playoffs.
Regardless, Roots will hope to lean on their stars in Sacramento, with both striker Peter Wilson once again sitting near the top of the league leaderboard in goals scored, and goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh playing the best soccer of his Roots career entering the match.
With the highest of stakes on the line, Saturday’s season finale shapes up to be perhaps one of the most memorable in Roots’ history.
